National Qualifications – Courses in Physical Education – Aims and Course Structure Physical Education at National level is broken down into two areas. The theory component provides learners with the opportunity to develop their understanding of factors impacting performance, the performance development process and monitoring and evaluating improvements in performance. This is assessed through a 60 marks written portfolio and accounts for 50% of the overall grade. The practical component challenges learners to develop their own practical performance for assessments in two competitive activities. Each activity is assessed out of a possible 30 marks and accounts for the remaining 50% of the grade.

Progression into the Senior Phase and Beyond:
Pathways in Senior Phase Physical Education are flexible to meet learners needs. It is possible that learners will evidence the required knowledge and understanding in S3 to meet the demands of the National 4 course, allowing them to pursue National 5 in S4. For others, National 3 may be evidenced in S3 and National 4 the next stage in their learning journey. Learners who have successfully achieved a National 5 qualification in S4 may enter Higher Physical Education in fifth year.
Following on from school a qualification in PE contributes to access to courses in teaching, sports coaching, sports centre management, journalism to name but a few.
