Employability Pathway

S5 Employability Pathway

We have introduced an exciting, new option called an Employability Pathway.

Employability Pathways is a curriculum aimed at pupils interested in progressing to college, an apprenticeship or employment when leaving school. It offers pupils the chance to study a variety of school college partnership courses whilst still at school. To do this pupil must commit to a flexible curriculum to fit in with tutor visits or off campus trips rather than traditional course choice columns. This year the SCP courses on offer included:

  •  Nat 5 Criminology
  • NPA 6 Childcare
  • Nat4/5 Mental Health and Wellbeing
  • SQA Personal Development Award
  • SVQ1 Horticulture
  • SCQF 5 Leading Outdoor Learning
  • Introduction to Principles of Animal Care

Additional courses previously offered are:

Nat 5 Retailing, PC Passport Level 4/5 and SQA Internet Safety Award Level 4

Pathways courses are continuously assessed by a mixture of coursework, assignments or unit awards with no final examination diet. Pupils are also expected to undertake NPA 4/5 Enterprise & Employability which includes at least one day-release work placement. This gives them not only an SQA accredited award but a valuable insight into the industry or career they are considering upon leaving school. For many young people, not knowing what they want to do is an issue so the chance to experience different work places and learn transferable vocational skills helps broaden their outlook and encourages them to be more aspirational.

Employability pathways also offers the flexibility to pick up other vocational skills and awards such as construction training at the Community Trade Hub, receiving instruction in joinery skills, safe use of hand and power tools, painting and decoration, including wallpapering, as well as other courses in First Aid, Barista Skills and Sea Survival (including certificate in sea worthiness).

Your Pupil Support Teacher, SDS Careers Adviser and Developing the Young Work Force Coordinator will be able to advise and help plan this option for you.
